Hats off to the organizers who made this event an overwhelming success!   I was very fortunate to  attend the second annual Pocket PC Summit (May 28-May 31) in Philadelphia this year.

The keynote speeches were insightful and very inspiring for anyone involved with Pocket PCs' .   It was an honour to meet and greet some of the key people that have helped shape this relatively young industry.

There is no finer group of individuals than those I met and spoke with at this show.   Their genuine openness and kindness truly left an impression on me (and my son!).   Special mention for Dale Coffing,  Jason Dunn,  Dave Ciccone,  Phillip Torrone and Tari Akpodiete.

Pocket PC Summit Success!   Where do we begin?   We can't wait to unpack our bags and show you all the new and wonderful things we brought back with us from Philadelphia.  Sneak peeks at new devices,  hot software and books will be filling the pages here at

See you in Philadelphia!     TEKNETKIDS is proud to announce that we will be in Philadelphia  May 28 - May 31,  for the second annual Pocket PC Summit.   The Pocket PC Summit is an exclusive trade show and conference exclusively dedicated to the Pocket PC.   We'll be sure to take lots of pictures and bring back a suitcase full of  new devices for review.

HandheldCanada.com recently began taking pre-orders for the new Pretec VGA CompactCamera.   We were pleasantly surprised when we saw the advertised price.   At $159.99 CDN,  this is probably the most affordable camera option we have seen anywhere.... north and south of the border!   The Pretec VGA CompactCamera(TM) is a full-featured digital camera card that can be used on any Pocket PC or Pocket PC 2002 PDA with a CompactFlash Type I interface slot.  Check out the HandheldCanada website for this model and others.

Toshiba of Canada announced Monday (May 6) it is entering the Canadian market with the e310 Pocket PC,  featuring the Intel 206Mhz StrongArm processor. The Toshiba e310 Pocket PC is said to be the smallest, thinnest and lightest Pocket PC to be available in Canada,  weighing 140 grams and measuring 12 mm thin and 125mm in length and 80mm in width.  The Toshiba e310 Pocket PC carries a suggested list price starting at CDN $649.   Toshiba will also be introducing a second Pocket PC featuring integrated wireless communications later this quarter.   (We will be posting an in-depth review on this new model in the coming weeks.)

BELL MOBILITY LEADS WITH FASTEST WIRELESS IN CANADA.    It has been a month since the mad rush by all the carriers to launch high-speed wireless services in Canada.    With a small cloud at the starting line, the dust has slowly settled as we round the first turn.   Surprisingly,  it looks like Bell Mobility has snuck in to the initial lead.   Much to our dismay,  Telus Mobility never made it out of the starting gate!

The new 32 MB full color Palm-size PC from Casio is the perfect tool for mobile information management

Intermec has announced a new Pocket PC 2002, the 700-Series Color model, that can survive "multiple 5 ft. drops to concrete." The 700 Color will utilize the Intel X-Scale PXA250 processor and a 3.8-inch reflective TFT display. Integrated wired Ethernet will be standard, but wireless options will include integrated 11 Mb/sec WiFi LAN, integrated GSM/GPRS and CDMA/1xRTT WAN, and Bluetooth PAN. Other integrated options include linear imaging and laser scanning.

The E-200 is one of the smallest and lightest Pocket PCs available. Its cool and sleek silver design fits very comfortably in your hand. Despite its small size, it still manages to contain a built-in Type II CompactFlash card slot and a Secure Digital / MultiMediaCard slot. But if you need the versatility of a full-sized PC Card slot, Casio offers an optional "PC Card Unit," a slip-on sled that includes a PC Card slot, extended battery, and USB host port. (MSRP $149.99, see Screen 1) The PC Card slot lets you use wireless connectivity cards (using CDPD, GSM, CDMA and LAN connectivity via 802.11b technology.), storage cards, and other PC Card devices.

When the first Pocket PCs were introduced in April of 2000, only three companies partnered with Microsoft to manufacture the device. By the end of 2002, over 20 will have versions of the new Pocket PC 2002. This success is great, but with so many available, it's becoming more and more difficult to find the one that's right for you.

Now that you've spent $400 to $600 on a Pocket PC, you should consider spending a little bit more to protect your investment. Most Pocket PCs come with a usable slip case, but it's pretty basic. This special edition of Gupta's Greats looks at some of the top cases available from third-party vendors.

Most of us don't have the time or inclination to test lots of Pocket PC software. We would rather have someone we trust simply tell us the name of the best Pocket PC database program, the best action game, or the best video program. We're about to do that for you. However, in truth things aren't so simple.

As it was, we ended up with 49 categories of "bests." The reason for so many categories is that your best game might be shoot 'em Metalion and mine might be Pocket Chess. Maybe you want a relational database with lots of functionality, and I want a simple list manager. We created these many categories to accommodate such distinctions. Even with all these categories our Board of Expert judges commented that it was often hard to compare programs. For example, which is more important, ease of use, lots of features, beautiful graphics, price, this feature set or that one? Suffice it to say, many users could benefit from the product winners and finalists listed below as well as the vast majority of our nominations at .  These programs are all useful or fun, reasonably priced, and relatively bug-free.

As described in my Pocket View column, over 20 experts from around the world examined over 300 products in depth. Below you will find the winners and finalists, plus the judges' thoughts about the products they tested.

IMPORTANT: My goal in selecting and editing judges' comments was to come up with the most useful, insightful, non-redundant information for you, the Pocket PC user. Therefore, from reading the judges' comments, you cannot necessarily infer how the judge voted, since we often published his thoughts about second or third place products. Similarly, the comments were not selected to "prove" why a product won. A product won because they got the most votes (5 points for a first choice vote, 3 for second, 1 for third).

Biggest thanks go to the many developers of Pocket PC products. Creating useful and fun software is normally a labor of love, not a get-rich-quick scheme. We may have missed or didn't select as the winner your favorite product or the one that you developed. The process was good but not foolproof. Next year, we plan to add hardware accessories and Web sites to our Best Product Awards. Whether you are a judge, developer, or end user, email me at h  with your comments and ideas of how we can make the process even better next year.

We've already covered a number of resources for getting help using your Pocket PC, but two that I haven't yet mentioned are Todd Ogasawara's Unofficial Pocket PC Newsgroup FAQ and Microsoft's extensive Knowledge Base.
